Howe\u00adver, the data cen\u00adtres with energy-inten\u00adsive super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adters release quite a bit of CO2. \u201cEnergy-opti\u00admi\u00adsed super\u00adcom\u00adpu\u00adter net\u00adworks through the use of wind energy\u201d (ESN4NW): Behind this title is a new, nati\u00adon\u00adwide joint pro\u00adject led by the SICP \u2014 Soft\u00adware Inno\u00adva\u00adtion Cam\u00adpus Pader\u00adborn at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Pader\u00adborn. In coope\u00adra\u00adtion with the SICP mem\u00adber com\u00adpany West\u00adfa\u00adlen\u00adWIND IT and their brand wind\u00adCORES, the idea was born to deve\u00adlop a new HPC infra\u00adstruc\u00adture with a sus\u00adtainable con\u00adcept. The Fede\u00adral Minis\u00adtry of Edu\u00adca\u00adtion and Rese\u00adarch (BMBF) is now fun\u00adding the pro\u00adject for the next three years with around 2.5 mil\u00adlion euros. The con\u00adsor\u00adtium also includes the Uni\u00adver\u00adsity of Pas\u00adsau, the Fraun\u00adho\u00adfer Insti\u00adtute for Relia\u00adbi\u00adlity and Micro\u00adin\u00adte\u00adgra\u00adtion IZM and the com\u00adpa\u00adnies Aix\u00adpert\u00adSoft GmbH, Rit\u00adtal, Atos Deutsch\u00adland and Zattoo.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"UPBPMText\">New infrastructure with data centres in wind turbines<\/h3>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"UPBPMText\">Tog\u00ade\u00adther, the part\u00adners are rese\u00adar\u00adching and demons\u00adt\u00adra\u00adting the poten\u00adtial of so-cal\u00adled \u201cwind\u00adCORES\u201d. These are wind tur\u00adbi\u00adnes that house data cen\u00adtres in their towers and sup\u00adply them with the wind power gene\u00adra\u00adted on site in an almost cli\u00admate-neu\u00adtral man\u00adner. The aim of the pro\u00adject is to deve\u00adlop the infra\u00adstruc\u00adture and ope\u00adra\u00adtio\u00adnal manage\u00adment of an HPC clus\u00adter within seve\u00adral wind tur\u00adbi\u00adnes (WTs). The direct, locally available rene\u00adwa\u00adble energy is to be incor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adted into the ope\u00adra\u00adtio\u00adnal manage\u00adment in order to make maxi\u00admum use of it. In addi\u00adtion, the waste heat gene\u00adra\u00adted is also to be con\u00adside\u00adred as a limi\u00adting factor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"UPBPMText\">For demons\u00adtra\u00adtion pur\u00adpo\u00adses, an alter\u00adna\u00adtive \u2014 bey\u00adond the state of the art \u2014 archi\u00adtec\u00adtu\u00adral approach will be pur\u00adsued and imple\u00admen\u00adted. The pro\u00adject part\u00adners are deve\u00adlo\u00adping an infra\u00adstruc\u00adture that con\u00adti\u00adnuously adapts the com\u00adpu\u00adting power of the decen\u00adtra\u00adli\u00adsed HPC clus\u00adter through inten\u00adsive data uti\u00adli\u00adsa\u00adtion and arti\u00adfi\u00adcial intel\u00adli\u00adgence (AI) methods via an ope\u00adra\u00adting plat\u00adform. The clus\u00adter is dis\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adted over seve\u00adral WTs and must opti\u00admally exploit the fluc\u00adtua\u00adting energy avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adlity. The pro\u00adject also explo\u00adres the impact of dif\u00adfe\u00adrent archi\u00adtec\u00adtures and ope\u00adra\u00adting stra\u00adte\u00adgies on the sus\u00adtaina\u00adbi\u00adlity assess\u00adment of the tar\u00adget sys\u00adtem. AI-based ope\u00adra\u00adtion manage\u00adment requi\u00adres beha\u00adviou\u00adral and pre\u00addic\u00adtive models of the infra\u00adstruc\u00adture and the local energy grid, which are not yet available. \u201cThe sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic and tech\u00adni\u00adcal chal\u00adlenges of the pro\u00adject lie, among other things, in the inten\u00adsive data deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment and use (energy grid &amp; infra\u00adstruc\u00adture), in the inte\u00adgra\u00adtion of arti\u00adfi\u00adcial intel\u00adli\u00adgence into con\u00adtrol loops, as well as in the sys\u00adte\u00admic mer\u00adging of all models with the help of a digi\u00adtal twin,\u201d explains Dr. Gun\u00adnar Scho\u00adma\u00adker, mana\u00adger at SICP. \u201cThe focus is on pre\u00addic\u00adtions of wea\u00adther-depen\u00addent local energy avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adlity, as well as pre\u00adcise beha\u00adviou\u00adral models of all inter\u00adac\u00adting trades with regard to their power con\u00adsump\u00adtion and heat out\u00adput,\u201d Scho\u00adma\u00adker&nbsp;adds.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"UPBPMSub\">Innovative concept with intelligent circuitry<\/h3>\n<p class=\"UPBPMText\">A spe\u00adcial fea\u00adture and inno\u00adva\u00adtion of the pro\u00adject is that the tower of a wind tur\u00adbine is inte\u00adgra\u00adted as a poten\u00adtial heat sink if no waste heat recei\u00adver is available or if it does not need the waste heat at the moment. The tower can then absorb the waste heat from the IT sys\u00adtems and cool it down. This func\u00adtion, tog\u00ade\u00adther with energy avai\u00adla\u00adbi\u00adlity, is to be used as a gui\u00adde\u00adline for the ope\u00adra\u00adtion of the HPC clus\u00adter. In con\u00adcrete terms, this means that the sys\u00adtem will only run if rene\u00adwa\u00adble energy is available and waste heat can be dis\u00adsi\u00adpa\u00adted in an almost CO2-neu\u00adtral man\u00adner. Initi\u00adally, the pro\u00adject will focus on the tech\u00adni\u00adcal and eco\u00adno\u00admic fea\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adlity, the func\u00adtional and didac\u00adtic demons\u00adtra\u00adtion of the ope\u00adra\u00adtion and the sus\u00adtaina\u00adbi\u00adlity assess\u00adment of the sys\u00adtem in the exten\u00added sys\u00adtem life cycle. Howe\u00adver, the inten\u00added results should be trans\u00adfera\u00adble not only to wind tur\u00adbi\u00adnes, but also to other HPC sys\u00adtems with waste heat gene\u00adra\u00adtors and waste heat&nbsp;users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"UPBPMText\">\u201cThe pro\u00adject par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlarly addres\u00adses the chal\u00adlenges of the energy tran\u00adsi\u00adtion and digi\u00adta\u00adli\u00adsa\u00adtion.
